Luxury Shepherd Hut Stay, Northumberland

The Foxes Den, Lucker

Shepherd huts were originally conceived a few hundred years ago in the late 16th century and strangely as suggested in their name used by Shepherds! and often used on farms in Northumberland. These early ones were pretty basic accommodation something which cannot be said for the fabulous Shepherds Huts in Lucker that we were invited to stay in. The Shepherds Huts are set in a quiet wooded area next to a stream in the picturesque village of Lucker, which is only around three miles from award winning beaches such as Bamburgh.

As you make your way down the landscaped pathway to the rustic huts and then into the enclosed grassed garden area (which is perfect for those of us with dogs), as you enter the Hut you are instantly met with a luxurious living space which would be the envy of any Shepherd.

There are currently four Shepherds Huts available to book with another coming soon. We stayed in the Foxes Den with views of the running stream close by and wooded area right beside us, a real oasis of calm.

One of the first things you notice as you enter the hut is the modern wood burning stove in the corner and though we didn’t use it I’m sure it is perfect for cosier autumnal days along with the flatscreen tv.

We were lucky enough that the weather was good throughout our stay and we were able to make full use of the double windows which opened onto the stream and allowed a slight breeze to flow through the hut.

The hut is full of luxurious features including Egyptian cotton sheets, a walk in shower and  a flushing toilet and sleeps two. It was great that the ‘twins’ our two doodles were allowed to join us too with no charge for dogs to stay.

Johny Johnson the owner of the Shepherds Huts and the team really have thought of every detail and created a luxury living space with quality fittings and contemporary furnishings throughout, you have to remind yourself that this is actually glamping.

With plenty of electrical sockets available and even USB charging points  there is no need to leave your technology at and free Wifi is included too, but if you do want time out and just want to enjoy the peace and quiet this is the perfect spot for it and you can listen to the sound of bird song with your morning coffee. Talking of coffee, another additional benefit of staying here, is the complimentary welcome pack provided which includes tea, coffee, biscuits, milk and sugar perfect for that early morning cuppa before breakfast, which incidentally is at The School House right next door to the Shepherds Huts and included in the rate.

Breakfast/brunch is served daily from 8.30am until 3.00pm in The School House offering an extensive menu including dishes such as a full Northumbrian breakfast, The School House loaded speciality croissant and my personal favourites Eggs Benedict and Parmesan toast.

If you’re looking for lunch/evening dining options during your stay The Apple Inn directly opposite has a varied menu catering for various dietary requirements and like the Shepherds Huts and The School House is dog/family friendly too. You can read more about The Apple Inn here  https://theappleinnlucker.com/

We dined at The Apple Inn (see separate post for information) during our stay and we enjoyed a delicious Sunday lunch available from 12-6pm.

By the time we returned to our accommodation we were ready to fall into the king size bed and gaze at the stars of the Northumberland dark skies through the overhead skylight. I have to say this is the first time we have taken the twins 🐶🐶on this kind of adventure and you know I think they enjoyed it as much as we did. Also worth noting if you are looking for a relaxing break the award winning spa and beauty salon Beau Monde https://www.beaumondelucker.com/?gclid=Cj0KCQjwof6WBhD4ARIsAOi65aiP5WFVI2M_Nxcjki0boi-bfwRf4Fw72uDyeTysPWv6r1j3q36QulAaAj7IEALw_wcB is a very short walk from the Huts too.

So if you’re looking for a unique experience in a peaceful Northumberland village with access to both the Northumberland coast and countryside close by for lots of adventures and memories then check out the Shepherds Huts in Lucker, a real hidden gem.
