Hints and Tips for Al Fresco Dining in Northumberland

Book ahead: Popular venues like The Jolly Fisherman, The Fairway Bistro (especially for Sunday lunch), Beadnell Towers, Beach House Hotel, and The Bamburgh Castle Inn fill up quickly, particularly during weekends and sunny weather. Reserving a table ensures you won't be disappointed.

Layer up: Northumberland's coastal weather can be changeable. Even on sunny days, bring a light jacket or cardigan for when the sea breeze picks up, especially during evening dining.

Timing is everything: For the best chance of securing a beer garden table at The Jolly Fisherman, The Bamburgh Castle Inn, or The Fishing Boat Inn, arrive early or consider visiting on weekday afternoons when it's typically quieter than weekends.

Check opening times: Whilst most venues serve food throughout the day, some have specific service times. The Tempus serves lunch Monday–Saturday 12pm–3pm, with à la carte dining from 5pm. The Courtyard's hours vary by day. The Red Lion Inn serves wood-fired pizzas April–September, with different hours in winter months. The Fishing Boat Inn is open Tuesday–Saturday plus Sunday lunch. Always check before you visit.

Make use of special offers: The Courtyard offers cocktail specials via their Stable Bar, whilst Beadnell Towers runs Two for One Cocktails Monday–Saturday 3pm–5pm. These offers make al fresco dining even more appealing.

Combine coast and countryside: Many of these venues are perfectly positioned for combining outdoor dining with exploring Northumberland's treasures. The Tempus, Dunstanburgh Castle Inn, Beadnell Towers, Beach House Hotel, The Bamburgh Castle Inn, The Red Lion Inn, and The Fishing Boat Inn all offer accommodation, making them ideal bases for multi-day exploration.

Don't forget your four-legged friends: Several venues welcome dogs in outdoor areas. The Tempus bar (until 6pm), Beadnell Towers terraces, The Courtyard, The Fairway Bistro (certain areas), The Jolly Fisherman (specific sections), Beach House Hotel (designated areas), The Bamburgh Castle Inn (designated areas), The Red Lion Inn (bar and beer garden), and The Fishing Boat Inn are all welcoming to well-behaved pups – perfect for post-walk refreshments.

Embrace the seasons: The Beadnell Terrace is sheltered and heated for year-round dining, but most outdoor spaces are at their best from May through September. However, a crisp autumn day with blue skies can be magical for al fresco dining with fewer crowds.

Take advantage of the views: Request window tables or specific outdoor spots when booking if views are important to you. At The Jolly Fisherman, the beer garden offers the best castle views. At The Fairway Bistro, The Bamburgh Castle Inn, Beach House Hotel, and The Fishing Boat Inn, outdoor seating provides uninterrupted sea vistas. At The Red Lion Inn, the decked area at the bottom of the garden offers panoramic estuary views.

Plan for parking: Popular coastal venues can have limited parking, especially during peak times. The Tempus, Dunstanburgh Castle Inn, The Courtyard, Beadnell Towers, Beach House Hotel, The Bamburgh Castle Inn, and The Fishing Boat Inn all offer parking for guests. The Jolly Fisherman can get busy – Craster has village parking but it fills quickly on sunny weekends. The Fairway Bistro at Seahouses Golf Club has ample parking available. The Red Lion Inn has some parking, though Alnmouth's narrow streets can be challenging during peak times.

Northumberland's al fresco dining scene celebrates everything we love about this magnificent region: dramatic coastlines, fresh local produce, warm hospitality, and that special quality of light that makes outdoor meals here truly memorable. Whether you're treating yourself to cocktails on a sheltered terrace, enjoying freshly landed seafood in a harbourside beer garden, watching dolphins from your hotel restaurant, or savouring wood-fired pizza with estuary views, our county offers outdoor dining experiences to treasure.

So grab your sunglasses, gather your loved ones, and discover why Northumberland's outdoor dining venues are among the finest in the country. The tables are set, the views are spectacular, and the welcome is warm – all that's missing is you.
